It's okay to make mistakes, we are human after all, but as teachers we need to be very careful or we might lose the relationships we work so hard to build with our students.
Unfortunately, sometimes students will try to make us believe that they don’t want to be in our class. Our job as teachers is to: one, not believe them and two, change their mind; make them want to be there.
Unfortunately, sometimes students will try to make us believe that they don’t want to be in our class. Our job as teachers is to: one, not believe them and two, change their mind; make them want to be there.
When this happens, here are some things to remember:
o Always try to find one thing a student accomplished that class, no matter how small, and point it out. Take two seconds at the end of each class to just catch a student before they leave and say, “hey, thank you for…. It was great… So glad to have you in my class” or something along those lines.
~ Let students know that you are there to support them and they can always come to you at their own time, in their own way. (i.e. come talk to you, write you a letter… etc.)
Sometimes as a teacher all you want to do is yell... DON’T EVER YELL...EVER! Just remember to S.T.O.P and breath, because if you do yell, you will lose everything you worked so hard to build. Remember:
- Baby steps – even if all you get from them is a “hello” never give up, keep trying to get them engaging in some way.
- Positive reinforcement goes a long way, and is always better then negative reinforcement.

- Be respectful and polite – Always say “THANK YOU”
- Everyday is a new day – everyone starts fresh – hit the RESET button.
- Don't be fake, students always know when you don't really care.
- And finally remember to S.T.O.P. Give your students:
~ Let students know that you are there to support them and they can always come to you at their own time, in their own way. (i.e. come talk to you, write you a letter… etc.)

“Trust takes years to build, seconds to break, and forever to repair.”
If you lose your cool you risk losing your safe/positive learning environment as well as your students respect and trust. A safe environment builds relationships and relationships build a safe environment. Everything is connected! So be careful not to upset the balance!
