A Personal Learning Network can be defined as an “entire collection of people with whom you engage and exchange information, usually online.” More and more learning is becoming digitalized so it is important to become a part of and contribute to this growing online community. I believe that a PLN is like creating your own personal Library, full of topics of interest to you that can be accessed from virtually anywhere. PLN can be extremely interesting and helpful. A teacher’s best attribute is to share and steal ideas; by creating a PLN we are able to expand our sources to not only include our colleges but people around the world. Online communication makes finding and sharing information quick and easy and can even be used to get group feedback on ideas and projects.
A PLN gets us online and keeps us informed and up to date about changes in technology, curriculum and the community in relation to education. PLN's allow us to connect with teachers around the world and see different perspectives, teaching styles and ideas. Being part of this online world is important because not only will it help me gain more knowledge it will help me reflect on my own teaching styles, adapt and try new things and therefore grow as a teacher. If I ever have to teach a subject outside of my own area of study, and I’m sure I will, I now have all these sources to draw information and learn from. In summary PLN's are important and I will use them for professional development, sharing and borrowing lesson plan ideas, learn about new technology and how to integrate it into my teaching, find collaborative solutions and interesting links to education news.
