Indicators or measures of success:
- During this internship, my goal is to build a positive learning environment where students feel safe and willing to take risks. I will accomplish this by creating effective classroom routines and scaffolding each lesson so that students may be successful.
Goal #2:
- My second goal for this internship is to improve my class management skills. I would like to improve my ability to deal with unexpected situations and problem behaviours more efficiently.
Reference to KSAs:
- KSA #1 - contextual variables affect teaching and learning. They know how to analyse many variables at one time, and how to respond by making reasoned decisions about their teaching practice and students’ learning;
- KSA #7 - students’ needs for physical, social, cultural and psychological security. They know how to engage students in creating effective classroom routines. They know how and when to apply a variety of management strategies that are in keeping with the situation, and that provide for minimal disruptions to students’ learning;
- KSA #15 - the importance of career-long learning. They know how to assess their own teaching and how to work with others responsible for supervising and evaluating teachers. They know how to use the findings of assessments, supervision and evaluations to select, develop and implement their own professional development activities;
Strategies:
- Lesson Planning – I will create detailed lesson plans, which will allow me to better understand the break down each activity. For each activity I will write step-by-step instructions and ask myself what students need to know in order to be successful.
- Observation – I will observe whether students are volunteering or refusing to participate. If students are refusing to participate, I will first ask myself why and then think about how I could have better prepared those students for success?
- Classroom Management – I will focus on:
- Giving positive reinforcement, by acknowledging students who are participating, following instructions and showing respect.
- Transitioning more smoothly from one activity to the next.
- Wait time. I will wait for students and I will not give instructions until all the students are listening. If I begin giving instructions and the chatter starts up again, I will not raise my voice to talk over them, I will stop talking and wait.
- Preparation – Before students arrive I will be present and ready to welcome students to my class. I am the teacher therefore I am the leader. I will lead by example! If I am prepared and ready to go, my students will see that, and they will be ready as well. Not only does it show that I am prepared, it tells students that I am ready for them and want them in my classroom. Greeting students at the door is part of class management. I would set students up for success by giving them tasks to accomplish or my expectations right from the get-go.
Indicators or measures of success:
- I will write daily reflections. Things I will consider include:
- Are my students successful taking risks?
- Why are my students not successful?
- Why are they unwilling to complete a task?
- How can I better scaffold my lesson in order to ensure students are successful?
- Has TM or UC noticed any improvement in my classroom management?
