I think this quote from Disney’s Mulan describes how teacher should be perfectly:
Sometimes being a teacher can be challenging. But no matter how your students push, you cannot allow them to get a rise out of you. You have to ALWAYS stay calm, be patient and show both understanding and strength. You need to be a mountain, a constant presence in your student’s life, let them know that in your class they will always find a safe place.
Today in class we explored building interpersonal relationships with students and discussed some ideas on how this could be done. Now I would like to take the time to share those ideas and maybe hear some other people’s thoughts.
With any class the first thing you need to ask yourself is: “Where are my students at?” How safe do students feel, how much of themselves are they willing to share and do they even want to be there? It all starts with a name! By knowing a students name you are taking the first step in building a strong relationship with that student. This small step has a huge effect on relationships because a persons name is part of their identity and it makes them feel accepted.
Next in order to continue building that positive learning environment start with a simple task, a task everyone will say yes to. It can be something as simple as: Greeting students at the door, with either a hello or a handshake and asking them to take a seat in their desks, on the floor or in a circle.
This being said, before your students arrive you need to be present, and ready to welcome students to your class. You are the teacher therefore you are a leader. LEAD BY EXAMPLE! When you are prepared and ready to go your students will see that, and they will be ready as well. Not only does it show that you are prepared, it tells students you are ready for them and want them in your classroom. Greeting students at the door is part of class management. Set students up for success by giving them a task or your expectations right from the get-go.
If you have any comments I would love to hear them! Thank you for reading I hope you enjoyed.
